This art print features a line by the Pre-Islamic poet, and one of the all-time greats, Antarah bin Shaddad.
Born to a black maid called Zabiba and a noble Arab of the Banu Abs tribe, Antarah's life was a life of paradoxes. Half a slave and half a free man, he was subject to double standards by his tribe. In times of war, they pleaded with the mighty Antarah to protect them. In times of peace, however, he was treated as a lowly slave.
This verse poignantly mocks the duplicity of human nature. Its the essence of Antarah's life: being aware of social hypocrisy, while still living up to his potential and freeing himself on his own terms.
In the print, Antarah on his horse (Al Abjer) is a digital collage adaptation of popular paintings in the style of Syrian folk artist Abu Subhi Al Tinawi (1888–1973) which inspired many of Antarah's depictions in modern day art and illustrations. The overall design is inspired by medieval Arabic and Persian illustrated manuscripts. It encapsulates our message of reviving Arabic heritage in a style that appeals to modern tastes- a harmonious blend of antiquity and modernity.
